In just eight months as the first female governor of Rhode Island, Governor Gina M. Raimondo passed an economic development and jobs focused budget through the General Assembly in record time, giving the state an unprecedented toolkit to reboot the economy.

Her strategy involves help from private-sector chief executive officers, forgiving student-loan debt and fixing state infrastructure. And her strategy is putting her on the national radar — according to Wendy Schiller, a political science professor at Brown University — which creates a national stage on which one of the smallest states can shine.

“We have the ability to go after the biggest, most difficult problems and solve them, and that’s extremely important. If I’m a CEO, I want to be in a place where the government works,” Governor Raimondo said in an interview with Bloomberg News.
